Water Quality is Incredibly Important to Your Health

Drinking adequate amounts of clean healthful water at appropriate intervals throughout the day is very important to the health of your body cells and your overall vitality. It is necessary for municipalities to disinfect water to minimize the risk of waterborne diseases, but it is not necessary for you to drink the disinfectant chemicals contained in that water (in your home).

Have you considered the long-term potential effects on your health from routinely drinking low levels of toxic disinfectant chemicals? Lon Willoughby believes such chemicals may contribute substantially to a reduction of overall health and may be important factors in the high heart disease and cancer statistics (and many other diseases) that have developed in America during the past 70 -100 years.

Lon's studies over many years helped him understand that low levels of disinfectant chemicals in drinking water, bathing water, and swimming pools may be significant contributing factors in many escalating disease conditions. Consider that we have a much higher rate of heart disease, strokes, cancer (many kinds), diabetes, etc. than occurred more than 100 years ago.

Scientific studies have linked chlorine and chlorination by-products to cancer of the bladder, liver, stomach, rectum, and colon, as well as heart disease, atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), anemia, high blood pressure, and allergic reactions.

The presence of chlorine and ammonia as disinfectants in water supplies can cause chloroamines to develop which may be substantially harmful when ingested daily over a period of months (or years). There is evidence that chlorine can damage or destroy proteins in the body and can also cause substantial adverse effects to the skin and hair.

Although chlorine is added to municipally supplied drinking water to kill pathogenic microbes, this highly reactive chemical (a halogen) can combine with fatty acids and carbon fragments to form a variety of toxic compounds, which comprise about 30% of the resulting chlorination by-products.

Many warning statements have been issued by qualified researchers regarding the potential for harmful health effects due to chlorinated water. However, the public at large, and many government officials (state and federal), have not studied these issues adequately; consequently, they do not comprehend the potential dangers associated with chlorinated water (for drinking water, bathing water, and swimming pools).

Many years ago, a medical doctor was concerned about these very serious health issues so he responsibly investigated some of the potential health problems associated with chlorinated water. The results of his investigation was so important that he wrote a book about his findings so large numbers of people could be informed quickly about what he had discovered. His book is titled CORONARIES, CHOLESTEROL, CHLORINE (published in 1969 and reprinted several times). Joseph M. Price, M.D. summarized the results of his studies and laboratory experiments by stating: "Chlorine is the greatest crippler and killer of modern times. While it prevented epidemics of one disease, it was creating another. Two decades after the start of chlorinating our drinking water in 1904, the present epidemic of heart trouble, cancer and senility began."

The health consultants at ABC's of Health can provide additional information about this exceptionally important subject. Lon believes that most people, when presented with relevant vital information, are capable of understanding the substantial advantages of having a "point of use" (POU) water processing unit in their home.

A good quality single-stage POU water filter can greatly reduce the level of chlorine, ammonia, and many other potentially harmful chemicals that may get into "drinking water" supplies (typical cost $90 to $110). Our quality double-stage filter ($150 to $199) or very high quality triple-stage water filtration unit ($289) can do a much better job of cleaning the water, with more reliability than a single stage unit, because Lon can customize the filter with a different type of filter element in each of the stages.

The combination of the two filter elements or three filter elements offers more versatility in cleaning the water for a broader range of potential contaminants. For instance, the two-stage filter and the three-stage filter can contain a special filter element to greatly reduce flouride in the output water. That cannot be done with a single-stage filter because it takes a separate filter to accomplish that objective, in addition to the filter element that can greatly reduce chlorine and many other contaminants. Different filter media can remove different chemicals from the water.

It is difficult to find a water filter unit that can reduce fluoride by 90 to 98%, but we have a filter element that can accomplish this feat. Lon Willoughby has studied the fluoride controversy over a period of about 30 years, and he is convinced that fluoride is a dangerous chemical that should not have been added to municipal drinking water systems throughout America. Most of the European countries have already banned fluoride addition in municipal drinking water systems, but we foolishly continue this dangerous practice in America. You can research the fluoride controversy on the Internet, and we will provide additional information about this issue in the AquaSpace Filter information that is presented later in this article.

Most of the filter elements that we offer need to be replaced only once per year (about 1,000 gallons of output water), and this means that a quality single-state water filter can be less expensive in the long run than the low-cost faucet mounted water filters (Brita and Pur units need filter replacements after about 100 gallons have been filtered). Consequently, one would likely need to purchase multiple filter replacements during a 12 month period. Our larger single-stage AquaSpace filter would do a better job of filtering the water and would be less expensive per year for filter replacement cost. It is therefore better and less expensive to purchase our AquaSpace single-stage water filter than to purchase the much smaller faucet mounted water filters. Note: the faucet mounted filters are considerably better than the pour-through filters because water pressure is available to push water through a much tighter filter media that usually contains multiple media materials that are not found in the simple pour-through filter units.

Calculate the costs for 1,000 gallons of filtered water with a pitcher type filter or a faucet mounted unit that needs filter replacement at 40 or 100 gallon intervals respectively. Add up these costs and average the annual cost over a three-year period. The larger single stage, double stage, or triple stage units will likely cost less while doing a better job of cleaning your drinking water in a more reliably manner.

A sophisticated "water purifier" can do an excellent job, with good reliability, of providing clean and healthful drinking and cooking water in a home or office - such as a purifier unit with multiple filters and a ceramic filter element or an Ultraviolet Purifier (UV) stage, or a Water Distiller unit with a high quality carbon filter addition, or a Reverse Osmosis system (RO) with an Ultraviolet chamber add-on stage.

The typical "water filter" does not qualify as a "water purifiers" (does not usually prevent pathogenic microbes from passing through), but a good water filter can improve the quality of water substantially when it is used properly on microbiologically safe water, and the filter element(s) are replaced at the recommended intervals.

HEALTH NOTICE: It is very important for water to flow through a carbon water filter slowly (1/2 gallon per minute or less). The filter media must have sufficient contact time with the water molecules to enable reliable adsorption of chemical contaminants.

HEALTH NOTICE: It is also very important for a water filter to be "flushed" first thing each morning; allow at least one quart of water to flow through a standard size single-stage carbon type water filter each morning before using any filtered water. Bacteria may have colonized in the water filter overnight (or other periods of inactivity), and flushing the filter will wash most of the bacteria down the drain. It is very important to accomplish this action daily.

Breathing Toxic Chemical Gases in Bathing Water

Lon Willoughby's studies have convinced him that breathing low levels of toxic fumes (gases) from chlorine and ammonia added to municipally processed water can be a serious health hazard that should be avoided. A Professor of Water Chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh stated: "exposure to vaporized chemicals in the water supplies through showering, bathing, and inhalation is 100 times greater than the exposure caused by drinking the water." When we, or our pets, breathe toxic fumes (gases), they go from the lungs directly into the blood and are quickly circulated throughout the body to all vital organs and other body cells (including brain cells). In this situation, the "filtering action" usually performed by the liver and kidneys for ingested liquids is instantly bypassed and we are poisoned by these toxins before they get to the liver or kidneys for filtering actions. Consequently, breathing toxic chemical fumes can be much more harmful than drinking the same chemicals in water.

Shower Filter using KDF Media

Water Filters and Water Purifiers

ABC is a distributor of high quality, high efficiency water filters, water filters with an ultraviolet (UV) light "purifier" stage (kill rate of 99.9% for many waterborne pathogens), stainless steel Water Distillers, and countertop Reverse Osmosis Systems (RO). A UV stage can be added to an existing under-the-counter RO unit to ensure that any microbe contamination from the RO water holding tank will be deactivated (killed or neutralized DNA-wise) by the powerful UV light rays.

Caution Notes: The typical RO System does not have a component mechanism installed to destroy microbes that might contaminate the water contained in the holding tank. The RO membrane generally does a very good job of screening microbes out of the drinking water, but pathogenic microbes do sometimes get into the water-holding tank (although this is generally not a high probability). Some pathogenic microbes can double in numbers at about twenty minute intervals; therefore, one microbe in the water-holding tank can become billions and then trillions within two or three days. If that should occur, the water from the RO holding tank could be dangerous to drink; it might make you sick because a large numbers of pathogenic microbes can be more than your immune system can cope with successfully in a short period of time. The damage that may be done could last a long time, perhaps affecting a person detrimentally for the rest of their life.

Consequently, Lon Willoughby believes that an under-the-counter RO water-holding tank should be sanitized at any time the owner suspects that the RO output water may be contaminated. In addition, Lon recommends sanitizing the water-holding tank at least four times per year to help minimize the ongoing potential for microbe contamination. Adding an UV stage into the output water line of an RO system is a very smart idea because it provides powerful UV light rays to damage/destroy the DNA of any microbes that may be in the water-holding tank output water. The UV add-on stage should be installed in the water line/tube right before the RO output faucet. Some of the most advanced RO Systems now have a UV stage built into the system.

Lon prefers the above-counter RO system because it does not have a sealed holding tank that can get contaminated over time, as reported above. It has an easy to clean open holding tank that can be cleaned frequently, as easily as washing a good size pot.

Best Water To Consume: Lon's in-depth studies and training related to water processing and purification has convinced him that quality filtered water and RO water are generally better choices than drinking distilled water (usually have a better ORP - Oxidation Reduction Potential). The exceptions to this conclusion would be situations that have poor quality raw water - with excessive toxic metal contamination problems (cadmium, copper, lead, mercury) or excessive chemical contamination (thousands of possibilities), or excessive microbe contamination, or radioactive contamination, etc.

In those situations, we may choose to use a water distiller to help remove heavy metals contamination or kill the microbe contamination with the boiling water and also reduce the radioactive contamination. The RO system can also do a good job of helping remove heavy metal contamination and chemical contamination, but it cannot kill microbes (without a UV chamber stage), and it is not as effective as a water distiller at removing most types of radioactive contamination.

Fortunately, most municipally processed waters do not have a substantial problem with any of those types of water contaminants. The water processed by the Greenville County (S.C.) water system provides a very good quality raw water - probably much better than most municipalities in the United States. People who obtain their water from this system are very fortunate to have an outstanding water system that can draw water from three pristine mountain area lakes that have about 10,000 acres of combined protected watershed around those lakes. Lon believes this is one of the best municipal water systems in America; however, the system adds chlorine and ammonia to kill microbes (could be pathogenic), liquid fluoride (hydroflorosylicic acid), and also adds caustic soda and polyphosphate (two chemicals that help protect water pipe system - about 20,000 miles of pipes).

Minimizing chemical contamination in water: Even though we have an excellent water system in Greenville, South Carolina, Lon's extensive health studies convinced him that it is wise to minimize consumption of chlorine, ammonia, chloroamines, fluoride, and trihalomethanes, etc. The chlorine and ammonia is used to minimize pathogenic microbe contamination, but we should filter these two toxic chemicals out of the water before drinking it or bathing in it.

Fluoride: Liquid hydroflorosylicic acid (fluoride) is a very toxic chemical, and Lon believes that it is outrageously foolish for municipalities to put this dangerous chemical into the water system (under the false premise that it will help protect children's teeth from decay). Unfortunately, this form of fluoride is not filtered out with the quality activated carbon filters that do a very good job of substantially reducing chlorine and ammonia. However, fluoride contamination of our Greenville County municipal drinking water can be reduced substantially by using a special fluoride removal filter, and we stock the best consumer fluoride reduction filter available.

Lon believes it is reasonable and sensible to drink water that has been processed to reduce these types of very toxic contaminants to a much lower level than is typically found in municipally processed raw tap water.
